The State of Washington has implemented a Leave Sharing Program for state employees. The purpose of the program is to permit state employees "to come to the aid of a fellow state employee who is suffering from or has a relative or household member suffering from an extraordinary or severe illness, injury, impairment, or physical or mental condition which has caused or is likely to cause the employee to take leave without pay or terminate his or her employment." (RCW 41.04.660) This also means that the employee receiving the leave will "retain his/her status as a district employee and receive all related monthly benefits." (Oak Harbor School District Board Policy 3358)
The provisions of Leave Sharing are:
No employee is required to donate leave - it is strictly voluntary.
A donating 12 month employee may donate either sick or vacation leave.
Employees must keep at least 10 vacation days and 22 sick leave days "on the books".
A donating "less than 12 month" employee may only donate sick leave.
Employees must keep at least 22 sick leave days "on the books".
The leave donated is not reimbursable unless unused.
